Online Event Rules

Online events generate their own particular set of interactions and rule challengers, these rules aim to set out how we can maximise our play patterns and behaviour to have a great time.

Rules

Persons violating these rules are subject to disciplinary procedures, up to and including removal from the tournaments, and/or banning from all future Beacon Gaming Events events.

Rule 1: Integrity

You should uphold yourself with integrity, and behave as how you want others to behave. No cheating, fraud, deception during your games.

Rule 2: Visibility is key

An on-camera shuffle and cut is required. No actions are to take place off camera, and your cards/hand should never leave view. Please keep hands on camera at all times when not actively playing.

Rule 3: No bullying

No bullying of other players to do what you want in game or out of game. No harassment of a player in the game to perform certain actions. This also includes harassment of a player to do things outside the game, like accepting a match you didn’t play, etc. Treat others with respect, and as autonomous human beings.

Rule 4: Spite plays/king making

Always play to your best results, never to the detriment of someone else's results. Each game should be treated as it's own individual outcome.

Rule 5: Spelltable/Webcam only, no simulation

This prohibition includes Moxfield, Cockatrice, etc. There is no substitute for real gameplay, and the ability to observe your opponents behaviours.

Rule 6: Minimum quality for proxies

All proxies must be of official art, in colour. Playing M:TG over webcam is difficult enough without introducing challenges around card recognition. No MDFC, or proxies with unofficial art.

Rule 7: Handling missed triggers

Missed detrimental triggers are placed upon the stack immediately upon finding them out (example, Pact of Negation). Missed non-detrimental triggers are put onto the stack only if the entire pod agrees, (example, Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe). It is the entire table’s responsibility to keep track of triggers.

Rule 8: Disconnection from game

If your camera is disconnected for more than 15 seconds, you will be required to shuffle your hand into your library when you resume your connection. Players must ensure they're reasonably aware of the states of other players hands.

Rule 9: Reporting suspicious behaviour

All players are required to report any suspicion of cheating or suspicious behaviour. Players bullying or intimidation to prevent reporting is in violation of Rule 3 and subject to disciplinary procedures.

Rule 10: Tournament follows the commander rule set

This includes no spoiled cards for upcoming sets that aren’t legal in commander yet. You must play according to the specified rules.

Rule 11: Civilised playspaces

Anything considered lewd, objectionable or NSFW (Not Safe For Work) is not allowed in tournament play. This includes card sleeves, tokens, accessories, altered cards, playmats, or other areas of your playspace. Even if your entire pod is okay with it, these are not allowed to be used in the tournament and may result in disciplinary procedures. If in doubt, reach out to your tournament organiser.

Guidelines

These are not hard “rules” but more guidelines to help you navigate certain situations that come up during a webcam game. Violation or manipulation of these guidelines are taken on a case by case basis. They are still subject to discipline if actions are found to be done in bad faith.

Etiquette

While playing over discord/webcam has some obvious differences compared to sitting across the table from somebody, please remember that others can still hear and partially see everything that is happening at your end of the world. Please use some common sense and respect other member's sensibilities.

If you are watching/spectating a game, please avoid interrupting games in progress. Most members will be fine with spectators if you keep quiet. If someone finds you to be disruptive, and they ask you to leave, you must do so. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.

Virtual Game Challenges

Things like Praetor’s Grasp and Opposition Agent don’t work in the same way as they do in an in-person game. If scenarios like this present themselves, please use your best judgment in order to resolve the spell. If you resolve a Gitaxian Probe, or a Sorcerous Spyglass, you can block other players in Spelltable before you show your hand. If you resolve a Praetor’s Grasp, try to have a particular card in mind. If not, someone will have to send you their decklist, or something else that can make it work correctly. Cards that are impossible to resolve in a webcam game, (like Thieves Auction) for example, should be removed from your deck prior to playing.

Game Rooms

We use Spelltable for our webcam games. Please do your best to ensure that these work with your setup.

Infraction Reporting

If you see something, say something!

We cannot police all games, and therefore cannot always be there when infractions occur. We rely on the players to help us identify potential issues.

General Guidelines

Everyone that takes part in online tournaments wants to create an environment that enables consistent competitive play, whilst being honest, welcoming and honourable. Please act in these ways, and everyone will have fun!
